The Temptation Of Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11)

This is a pretty well-known passage I can say. It is basically about when Satan the devil tempts Jesus after being in the desert for 40 days without food.

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3 During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.
matthew4:1-11

Throughout this passage, it talks about Satan tempting Jesus to worship the devil instead of God. Although Jesus was hungry and could have done all those things Satan suggested, he didn't. Why? Verse 4,7, and 10 explains the reasons for choosing not to.

Verse 4:
But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

As Jesus says, we do not just live on "bread" (food) but we live by God's rules and commands for us. We MUST live by his commands as well as "bread".

Verse 7: Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”

Like in verse 4, Jesus says to live by the word of God, and in verse 7, he clearly states, "The Scriptures also say..." therefore relating to the Word. From this verse, we learn not to test God.

Verse 10:
“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

I personally, really love this verse because it is so powerful and is a great reminder. He once again refers to the scriptures, and he also overcomes temptation. We learn here to ONLY worship and serve the LORD ONLY. At times, we may put other things in our lives as first priority therefore showing that you serve THAT instead of God. We must learn to keep God in first place and top priority. No other Gods or things, or idols. What is the first commandment? Exodus 20:3 states,

"You shall have no other gods before me."

How does this apply to you then? Well, in those 3 verses, we can apply it to our daily lives.
- Live by his Word as well. How? Through STUDYING the Bible.
- Do not test the Lord. We must BELIEVE and trust in him instead of testing him.
- Serve and worship him ONLY. Remember the first commandment and make sure you have no other gods before him.

Jesus Christ is the PERFECT example we should all follow. He overcame temptation and so should we. Trust God and pray to him that you do not fall into temptations.

41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
